Fans of Scotty, the elephant born at the Louisville Zoo, appreciated festivities planned for his third birthday on March 13th. His double layer cake was made up of all his favorites: alfalfa, hay, fresh celery, watermelon, carrots, oranges and three bamboo sticks to represent candles.
Scotty has grown in the last year. On his second birthday, he weighed 1800 pounds and was five feet tall. This week, he weighed 2,385 pounds and measured in at five feet nine inches.
“The birthday boy is definitely growing up,” Louisville Zoo Elephant Area Supervisor Dave Campbell said proudly. “I am excited that the community came out to celebrate with us. I think people enjoy seeing Scotty grow up and marking the milestones along with us.”
For his birthday present, Scotty was given a street sweeper brush. “Scotty, Mikki and Punch seem to really enjoy it,” Campbell said. “It is great enrichment. They love to scratch themselves, lean on and play with it.”
Visitors can see Scotty and the other elephants daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The current rates for entry are $11.95 for adults and $8.95 for children 3 to 11 years of age. Children 2 and under are free. If you plan to visit the zoo often, consider a membership for a greater discount.
