Bible Stories about Love for Small Children
Small children need Bible stories to learn about God’s love for them. Fortunately, the Bible is filled with stories of God’s grace and mercy as well as tips on how we are to love one another, love our neighbor as ourself and practice the Golden Rule.
The Good Samaritan
The story of the good Samaritan is found in Luke 10:30-37 and ties into Luke 10:27, which says to love your neighbor as yourself. It is about a man who is robbed and lies in a ditch needing help. People pass him by until a Samaritan man comes along and helps him. The Samaritan goes far beyond helping the man, even giving him money. Jesus used the parable as an example of how we should treat others.
The story of Noah’s Ark is about a man who finds favor with God. God tells him to build an ark for him and his family to go into because there will come a great flood. The people of the time are doing evil things and refuse to repent, so God destroys the earth with rain. He saves Noah’s family and two of each kind of animal. It rains for 40 days and 40 nights. This is a story about God’s great love for Noah and for mankind that made him decide to save enough people to repopulate the Earth. The story is found in Genesis in chapter six.
Woman at the Well
In John 4:1-30, the Bible tells of Jesus and the woman at the well. The woman is undesirable and is even at the well at an unusual time to avoid the ridicule of the other women. However, she is kind and draws water for Jesus and he shows her love and mercy. He tells her that he is the living water and that she needs never thirst again. Even though others avoid her, he reaches out to her and shows her love.
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the greatest story of love in the Bible. The story is found in all four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. For small children, keep the story simple. Jesus is God, but came to earth as a human baby. He grew into a man, was tortured, crucified and died so we can be saved from our sins. He loves us so much that he was willing to suffer for us so that we can live in heaven with Him forever. As the child gets older, add in more detail to the story. Very tiny children may only understand the most basic element that Jesus loves them. Songs like Jesus Loves the Little Children and Jesus Loves Me are good songs to help teach this story to a child.
