My Job Is to Be Your Parent

My Job Is to Be Your Parent

There are some tried and true “momisms”, nuggets of wisdom, our mothers tell us. These are also things we catch ourselves saying to our own kids and suddenly realizing why our moms said them. One of my favorites when my girls would whine and gripe about me being stricter than someone else’s mom or saying that so-and-so’s mom was just like that person’s best friend and didn’t give them the same rules that I gave to my kids was this:

“It isn’t my job to be your best friend, it is my job to be your mother. You have enough friends.”

While this is 100% true, it is hard not to be considered the friend parent. The good news is that if you stick to your guns, the friendship develops when they are adults, and your kids will be better for it in the end.
