Yet Another Reason to Hate Housework

Yet Another Reason to Hate Housework

Dear Readers,

You all know how much I loathe housework. There are just so many other things you can do in a day and housework is one of those things you do and have to redo, and redo, and redo again.

Yesterday I was sweeping, because it was to the point I had to. I really didn’t think i was straining myself all that much, but I got a back spasm that threw me to my knees. I had to hobble to the bedroom and lay down.

My wonderful husband went and got me some Doan’s and some muscle spray and has been helping me. Today, I am very, very sore still.

I probably won’t have a lot of articles for you this week due to being unable to sit and type for long, but am hoping it clears up very soon.

Thanks and remember to be cautious of that housework. It truly is a pain in the back.

Love,

Lori Soard, Crabby Housewife

How to Choose the Perfect Paint Color for Your Room

How to Choose the Perfect Paint Color for Your Room

As many of you know, we’ve recently undertaken some home remodeling projects, starting with our master bedroom suite. I was on the hunt for the perfect paint color for my bedroom, but I was open to nearly any color. I finally decided on a neutral-ish hue because I may decide to take it on into my living room/kitchen area at some point.

So, that left me with grays, tans, etc. I decided I wanted a tan, but a WARM tan and went with a color called Warm Caramel. I ordered the sample, loved it, and went and bought a gallon. I only finished the trim in our closet when I realized the color was way too dark for my liking. I’m still going to use that paint for a dresser I am revamping and doing a chevron pattern on, but not on the walls.

The problem with choosing a color is that it will look very different in the store under the fluorescent lights, but when you get it home it won’t look right. My husband finally found a color at Porter Paints called Rabbit that we liked. So, I am now in the process of getting it up on my walls.

Choosing a Paint Color

Consider your color preferences. Is there a color or set of colors you gravitate to? Throughout our marriage, I’ve gone with deep reds and sage greens and tans. I don’t know why, but I like the way those colors mesh together.

What Goes Well?

What colors go best with those foundation colors you love? Perhaps your furniture is blue. Then, you’ll want to stay in a cooler range of colors. Blue is hard to match, but you could easily paint your walls a soft gray.

What Do You Love?

Next, go to the paint store and just choose a bunch of sample strips of colors you love. Don’t worry for now about what goes with what or your overall palette. Remember that when you get the colors home, they’re going to be really different than they look in the store.

Sample Match Up

Now, you are going to hold those samples strips up in the rooms you’d like to paint and see where they look good and where they don’t. Once you’ve narrowed the choices down, you should also hold those strips up to your existing furniture, carpet and other transitional items.

Order Sample Batches

Now, you probably have narrowed your choices to two or three colors. You should order small samplers of actual paint at this point. Place them on the wall right next to one another and figure out which one you like.

Paint Just One Small Wall

I did all of the above and remember that I had chosen that warm caramel. I still actually love that color but when I got it onto the wall in a wider section, it was far too dark for my taste. Instead of investing in paint for an entire room and deciding you hate it, paint one small wall or a larger section with the sample you have left. These sample containers have quite a bit of paint in them. It should be enough to give you a good idea if you like the color on your walls or not.

Love it? Great! Then go get the gallons you need and get started changing the face of your room. Happy painting!

The Trick for Opening a Can that You Can’t Live Without

The Trick for Opening a Can that You Can’t Live Without

I’m always amazed at what pops up in my Pinterest feed from day to day. It often inspires me to start a new project, learn a new hack, or cook a new meal. What in the world did I do for inspiration before I had Pinterest?

Today, when I visited Pinterest an article by Off-Grid.info caught my eye. The article was “How to Open a Can Without a Can Opener (Amazing).” Of course, I had to find out what this trick was. How many times have I struggled to open some huge can that didn’t want to fit up under that tiny can opener wheel?

Okay, so this turned out to be actually more of a survival technique, but in a pinch you could use it for regular cooking. The article outlines the method and shares the YouTube video below. Check it out and let me know what you think. I think the next time I have that giant can of green beans from Sam’s Club, I just might try this out.

Make Your Own Fall Letter for the Front Porch

Make Your Own Fall Letter for the Front Porch

Recently, I’ve noticed a trend where there are family surname letter decor items in all the stores. However, these items are often pretty expensive, running as much as $40 each. Since I’m a cheapskate, I don’t want to pay that. I decided to make my own with the types of decorations I like and this is what I came up with (picture above). I also stenciled an “S” on a white fake pumpkin, which I think adds to the effect.

You’ll Need:

  • 18″ wooden letter with the first letter of your last name.
  • Chalk spray paint (I chose white because I plan to repurpose this letter for other seasons, but you can use the colors of your choice)
  • Burlap in a burnt red
  • Yellow fall silk flower
  • Wooden buttons
  • Glue gun with glue

Instructions

This is a super easy project, but there are a few things that make it look even better.

  1. Lay your letter out on plastic or papers and spray paint it. You may want to do this outside. My husband let me use his little garage workshop.
  2. Apply even pressure to the spray paint can as you go from side to side. Do not spray too much on any one spot or you will get runs.
  3. Allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes and add a second coat.
  4. Now, I started to turn this over and paint the other side but then I realized that was silly. No one will see that side. I did a single coat to seal the wood, but didn’t worry too much about being perfect with it.
  5. Once the letter is completely dry, bring it inside and wrap the burlap. Start with the end on the back. You can add a dab of hot glue if you want to hold it in place. Wrap around a couple of times. You will need to glue it down here and there to make the burlap tight around your letter. This can vary depending on your letter. “S” is curvy and was harder to get straight. If you have a letter like “L”, this will be much easier.
  6. Tuck the stem of the bunch of fall flowers into the top of the burlap. I actually didn’t secure this. I want to be able to easily swap it out for Christmas with a poinsettia.
  7. Hot glue the buttons on top of the burlap. If you want to swap out the burlap color later on, then you might want to make sure you don’t press down too hard as the glue will attach to the wood if you do.

That’s it. I chose to lean mine up against the house next to the front door. You can also hang it up if you’d like. Easy and adds a very personal touch to the house. I’m in love with it!
